BAER ART CENTER, Northern Iceland

June 2016

1 MONTH RESIDENCY

My one month residency at Baer Art Center in Iceland’s Summer was an experience like no other. Located up in the isolated north of the country, five Artists were selected for this unique residency - two photographers, two painters and one ceramicist - that was me :) With the sun barely dropping below the horizon we were in daylight 24 hours a day, with midnight walks and wanderings common. Baer is located between a mountain range and a fjord on a horse farm. The isolation, quietness, and vast space was a perfect setting for exploring new ideas and older ideas that seem to hang around. My starting point in this residency was to use the landscape and the elements within it to sift through ways of combining disparate elements within the one object. I was able to order in three clay bodies from mainland Europe to explore these ideas. Without a focus on a finished object I was free to see where one idea led to another. Documentation of these results was a crucial part of the project.

Since 2015 residencies at Baer have changed format. Baer Art Center now offers shorter residencies and workshops. If you get the opportunity to apply/undertake any sort of project at Baer, grab it.
